You are saying that an acceptable in-game name should always be reflective of the character appearance?
Why would you be bothered by some name in a game?

Linguistically, the Japanese language doesn't have an L or an R. It's what's called a 'flap', like in Spanish. And any Japanese name written in English is nothing more than an approximate Romanization, so that argument is moot.
And you do realize that there are real-life white people that have Japanese names, right? And Japanese people that have so-called North American names?

I don't mind seeing novelty names in PVP because they'll probably deleted for some new one the next day. I don't mind it so much in PVE unless the person is trying to turn it into an act that's getting stale. Also I've seen some people with names like that go far with those characters in the game and I couldn't imagine doing some big time title hunting with a name like that.

I don't mind it per se, it just does tend to label people as fanboys or idiots prior to me actually talking to them.
I suppose I should be grateful that these people have labelled themselves so openly so that I might avoid any contact with them whatsoever.
I'm a tad embarrassed that people will assume I got my main toon's name from the recent, appallingly bad movie Beowulf.

I've found that a good portion of people that make serious names are either extraordinarily reserved or they have an aura of superiority. Neither are exactly fun to play with, in my opinion.
I play with anyone, though. The names can get annoying at times, but when you choose not to play with someone you lose the chance at possibly finding someone really fun. All that said, I love the novelty names that make me smile and I like it when people can enjoy mine (usually Breakfast Mc Ritual or Christmas Bandit.)

Yes, I have an argument against that first point, i'm just not in a mood to make an argument
And for that second part, yes, there is. But does that mean your average japanese/american person has a japanese/american name? No. Gwyneth Paltrow named her child Apple. Yet your average american isn't named after a fruit.

on the other hand he really is a fruit. naah kidding, i love the guy.
as a side note, anyone who uses numbers in their name and comments on other peoples names is...what the word again? hypocritical? yeah thats it.

I like some novelty names. Some stuff def. makes me laugh, like "Forgetful was Uhh" (one of the best names IMHO).
Why? Probably because I don't RP... I talk with RPers a lot, who need names that fit their characters. I agree to that, given you give a certain personality to the character and do want his name to fit, in most cases.
I don't see my characters has having personalities, with the exception of my necromancer. I don't know how I could RP as a GW character, for some reason. I like RPGs in general, I'd attend LARPs if I could... most probably because I don't have an avatar really. I play the character. I have such hair color, such personality and all. While on GW, well I have the avatar in front of me and there's some... dissociation O_o.
EDIT: There we go, I got it. In a LARP, I AM the character while in GW and other games I CONTROL a character. It's not the same to me.
And well, I fail to see how I could RP with so many different characters, especially if they're a family, like I see some people have.

For PvE, I like serious names.
For disposable PvP chars, I love funny novelty names.
I hate any unoriginal names that are based off obvious movie and game characters or that have multiple X's in their names. For my name, both the first and last are based off a game and an anime respectively, but they aren't very well-known as opposed to something like LotR or FF.

i like novelty names in pvp but for PvE i chose names in the form of the irish language (Just simple phrases that wouldn't mean much to most people but it just gives me a bit of an identity)

The only time I've gotten annoyed by names in games wasn't in Guild Wars, but it was only because somebody had used a name that I had created and I was doing it more to be funny towards the person that pointed it out to me.
I name myself for whatever reason I want. It's all in good fun for me. I'm sorry if it offends you that I named one of my characters after a Killswitch Engage lyric.

I'm fairly easily entertained, so I find a lot of the moderately clever wordplay names fun (Forgetful Was Uhh, for example, made me laugh hysterically). That said, I already have a naming convention for my characters that gives them all 'real' names. Well, except for one of my PvP slots that is used for our alliance scrimmage league... her name is intentionally ridiculous.

In PvE it annoys me as it sort of brakes the storie line to hear a NPC refer to someone as "X X O Owner O X X"
but in PvP I think its welcome, the characters are cheap and novel, often rerolled and constantly at the attention of toher players
Devil-may-Care style names are the way to go there
